Peter with his first taste of rice cereal. About two weeks after this, he had some again, for the second and probably last time. We're not sure if it was the cereal, his formula, or the 4 month shots he had in the morning, but he had a serious allergic reaction in the evening which had us rushing him to the hospital. By the time we got there, he had calmed down, his breathing was back to normal, and he was actually extremely happy, but his face was still puffy and the hives had not gone down. I am searching for a good pediatrician for him now. No fun to deal with allergies!! No fun! You know, I wouldn't give up on rice cereal altogether - he had it once with no reaction, right? It is a little early for solids yet and it could be that he is still developing the necessary enzymes to deal with the new food.
I would recommend our ped, but she is on mat leave:( Sorry! I hope you figure it out soon.
Well, the first time he had it, for about an hour or two afterward he had a rash on his chin - I figured just from not wiping it off well enough every bite since it seemed to be just a contact thing, and he was fine afterwards for the rest.
I talked to my nurse and she suggested either waiting a bit and trying a different brand of rice cereal, or trying oat cereal instead. I think we'll wait a few weeks before trying anything new, this wasn't a very fun experience! How is little Danielle doing?
Hi,
What brand of cereal did you try? My kids would only tolerate Heinz since it is the only one I have found that doesn't have milk ingredients in it. Although that does sound like a severe reaction! Is he on formula or are you exclusively nursing? Because if you are only nursing and he hasn't been exposed to the milk ingredients in formula that could be the cause!
Lois (in case you don't know me I am a friend of your sister Danielle)
Hi Lois,
We tried Nestle, just add water cereal. I'll take a look at the Heinz cereal, someone else recommended that to me as well. He is breastfed but I started supplementing him with formula (Nestle Goodstart) about two weeks ago, and he has been fine with that... even though it contains milk ingredients. How did your kids react to milk? Did you use soy formula? Thanks for your help and suggestions!
I really love that last picture of Peter.
I'm so sad that I couldn't come to babysit today. The first time.....
:(
Hi Rachel;) Danielle is doing OK, but we are having a heck of a time with her at night. I'm starting to wonder if she has reflux, even though she doesn't have the classic signs. Rachel was the same way. I've also started her on forumla and am working towards weaning her completely. I know it's early, but I can't handle it anymore - it's too busy here:) I haven't tried cereal yet b/c she isn't showing signs of interest in that yet. Probably within a month, though.
I took her for her 4 month shots on the 18th and she was 16lbs, 9ozs. M&R are maybe 21 lbs, now? LOL!
I forgot to say: my nephew had a mild reaction to the rice cereal (as you describe with Pete's first go at it) and they switched to oat and wheat and that worked great. Worth a try! I pray that this isn't a serious, life-long allergy for him. Often times, kids grow out of these thing, though. Take care!
My oldest, now 5, had very bad exzema (how do you spell that word anyway!?) from his first milk based formula but no breathing issues or hives. We put him on Soy Formula for about 1/2 a year -- that seemed to help for him since he tolerates milk just fine now. He now has asthma off and on and is anaphylactic to peanuts/tree nuts though which we found out through a severe reaction which sounds similar to Peter's -- hives on his body, eyes swelling shut, struggling to breath...fun stuff! Hopefully you find out soon what is going with little Peter. It is scary to watch your little baby endure this kind of stuff.
